Teaching Diverse Learners with Assistive Technology

Assistive technology tools designed to aid students with disabilities can serve a wide variety of learners, in addition to helping students with disabilities in general education classrooms. These tools include recording pens, text-to-speech cameras of various sizes, web-based translators, and more. The best part? Many of these tools are free! Certified teachers should download and complete the Prior Approval Form before registering. 1 PLU.

SoMe4Teachers I: Social Media for Professional Learning and Knowledge-Sharing

Social media are a valuable suite of tools that can support building community within a department, within a school, or throughout a district. This full day workshop provides a hands-on opportunity to create and maintain a professional online identity, participate in a professional learning network, and illustrate how professional development and streaming media tools can be as close as your smartphone. Certified teachers should download and complete the Prior Approval Form before registering. 1 PLU.

SoMe4Teachers II: Engaging Learners Using Social Media in the Classroom

Who needs expensive clickers? Middle and high school students already have the tools they need to participate in an active classroom discussion, even if they happen to be shy. Bringing social media tools into the classroom doesn’t require a separate planning session. Rather, you can incorporate these tools within your existing lesson framework. This course will show you how to encourage responsible online behavior in your students, and how to lead them in contributing to and benefitting from a global learning network. (Social media in the elementary classroom is covered in the Fostering Digital Literacy course.) 1 PLU.

Critical Thinking for Internet Research

In this course, educators develop strategies to help students build critical thinking skills and attain information literacy. Participants will explore different research models and strengthen their online information-gathering and curation skills. Learners will then create a model for use in a social media-based lesson that is designed to teach students where to find information, how to evaluate it, and how best to apply it to the task at hand. This course combines a series of 5 live webinars with extensive work in guided independent research and self-assessment, which will be closely monitored by the instructor. (Online only) 3 PLUs.

Fostering Digital Literacy in the Elementary Classroom

In a 21st century knowledge economy, it’s never too early to help kids understand the tools they will use every day. This course offers an overview of the parts and basic inner workings of desktop and laptop computers and the internet in clear terminology that younger learners can understand. Additionally, you will learn ways to reinforce these terms and skills throughout the instructional day. The goal is to give children the opportunity to be not just consumers of technology, but builders and innovators of tomorrow’s tools.
